How to do cut editing well! (formula for video editing)

2024-02-01

Hello, this is GOM lab.

Did you know that there is a formula for video editing, everyone?

After watching a video, some may feel that the content isn't interesting.

I believe today's information can be particularly helpful to those who feel this way. 😊

People who find their videos boring often sense that something is not quite right.

In fact, we've been exposed to and have become accustomed to videos since our childhood.

This means that while you may not consciously know the correct answer to video editing, you might unconsciously recognize what doesn't work, thanks to exposure to TV and movies!

TV and movies are often professionally cut and edited, and what professional editors consider most important is 'harmony.'

There are several formulas for naturally cropping videos.

So, today's video editing tip is the 'cut editing formula.'

Shall we get started?

Part 1. Let’s increase the fun of watching videos! Take advantage of various sizes!

One of the things to consider when shooting and editing video is visual beauty.

The most basic aspect of visual beauty is various sizes.

The video includes full shots, bust shots, close-up shots, and extreme close-up shots.

How to combine these shots will be the most important key.

One rule often used when combining shots is “Do not use shots of the same size and arrangement in succession.”

If the cuts are arranged like this, the flow of the video will not be natural.

This is called a jump cut.

When a jump cut occurs, a problem arises that causes viewers to feel that it is a momentary movement or an unnatural movement.

To solve this situation, you need to use cuts of various sizes. However, you need to control it so that the difference between the cuts is not large.

If the cut is repeatedly reduced and enlarged too much, it can easily confuse viewers!

Rather than combining various types of shots, it would be better to think of it simply as providing a variety of perspectives to people watching the video. 😊

Part 2. Basic rules of video editing! The rule of 30°!

The rule of 30° is that when the same person appears in succession, the camera must move at least 30 degrees to connect the next shot.

I think this will be easier to understand if you watch the interview video.

If you look at the composition of the interview video, you can see that the 30-degree rule is exactly followed.

If you arrange the composition like the photo above, you will be able to understand the flow naturally, right?

Part 3. Speak through video! Cut tempo & continuity

There are several important factors to consider when cropping a video.

Among them, the most important element, 'cut tempo', plays an important role in creating the atmosphere of the video.

Cut tempo refers to the length of the cut.

As you all know, a long cut creates a relaxed or emotional atmosphere, while a short cut creates a sense of urgency and rhythm.

One of the things that people often do when adjusting the length of a cut is to 'set the music and edit it to match the sound source.'

This is not a wrong method, but it clearly has its drawbacks.

If you edit to music, viewers will unconsciously predict when the screen will change and may feel bored.

Therefore, rather than adding music and editing accordingly, we recommend that you edit while thinking of the length of the cut as a breath.

Alternatively, you can edit to match the music, but often vary the tempo rather than just following a certain beat.

That way, you can try rhythmic cut editing in a safer and more challenging way! 😊

Today, I explained information about video editing.

I think the most important concept today is about cut tempo.

(That doesn’t mean the rest is unnecessary, you know? 😆)

As I said at the beginning, we grew up watching TV since we were young, so even if we don't know the right answer, we know the wrong answer.

Today's content was something to refer to in order to correct the wrong answers.

And the most important thing! It's endless practice.

There are currently a variety of programs available, but we especially recommend that beginners take their first step with GOM Mix,

the easiest and most intuitive domestically produced video editing program!

GomLab will continue to provide many useful tips on the blog as it has done so far :D
