#1LINKGOM can't play mov files but WMP can / Posted 2010 07/24 22:14
Media Player Classic also can't play them, but Windows Media Player can--which is quite surprising. Running Windows 7 x64 ultimate. I recorded the videos with a Lumix camera. I'm including a sample.

One option: VLC Player will play .MOV files (and plays your clip ok).

Gom PLayer:
---------------
One way to play .MOV files with Gom Player is to install QuickTime Alternative.
The installer includes MPC (Media Player Classic) but - from memory - you can leave that selection unchecked during install and just install the QT codecs.

I played a short 31 second .MOV clip (Aussie_High.mov) in Gom Player ok; no worries.
I attempted to play your 1 second clip (P000974.mov) in Gom Player but got the error popup saying that it needs a codec.

I checked both clips in a binary editor, with result shown in this screenshot:

http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/7025/movbinary.jpg

(Note: You can check the binary directly when the error box pops up by clicking on the "Details" button)

As you can see, they both have File type ( ftyp) = qt (aka .mov)
But only the first/top one seems to have a header (moov); in its position, your clip has media data (mdat) - which I think is the actual film content (the monkey in the cage).

I don't know if that's the problem (your clip has no header) because, as said, it plays ok in VLC Player.
But, as also said, .MOV files with headers play ok in Gom Player if the QuickTime codecs are made available to Windows by installing Quicktime Alternative.

Maybe you can check your full film that you excised that clip from because maybe THAT works ok? (After installing QuickTime Alternative)

Someone else may be able to help you better and/or correct my assumptions.
Good luck.

The clip is actually only 4 seconds long. I recorded it with a video camera. It is one of dozens that were stored though, and I'm not sure how the Panasonic Lumix deals with multiple videos taken. They are all stored separately on the SD Card though.

Media Player Classic cannot play the file. Klite Full (which includes Media Player Classic) was installed at the time. I uninstalled those and installed the Shark Codec pack, but again only WMP could play the file, albeit with NO sound.

I downloaded the Quicktime Alternative (leaving out the browser plugins) and installed it and still only WMP can play the file. I'm not very familiar with Quicktime Alternative, so I may have goofed on the installation settings.

VLC player played the file fine WITH sound. I don't like VLC. GOM has long been my absolute favorite and it bothers me that it can't handle such files. As I recall, it handled the files on a previous installation of Windows, x86 version vs the current x64 version. Seems like Windows 7 x64 gives me all kinds of grief like this.

Thanks for the info.

1.- Did you try Media Player Classic AFTER you installed Quicktime Alternative?

2.- Well, you have to make sure that you don't unckeck too much when installing QT Alternative. I tried again, unchecking MPC and the Active-X control, and installed what was left. I didn't fiddle with settings at all. And Gom Player plays .MOV formats ok.

3.- I'd suggest that you find and download a .MOV short from the net (maybe 20-50mb) and see if that works with Gom (with QT Alternative installed).
- If it plays fine, that might suggest your own clips are the problem.
- If it doesn't play ok, it might point to Win7 being the issue (I use WinXP)
- For each file (work/doesn't work), check the binary and see if the header (moov) is present or not. It make give you a pattern.

I have no more to offer on this one.

MPC does play the videos now (after installing QT alternative). Blows my mind that Gom can't. Even though Gom is not 64 bit, I still think being in a 64 bit environment if hindering it. So my guess is Gom still has a compatibility issue. I'll install 7 x86 in a virtual machine to confirm this, of course. Thanks. You are very helpful.

#6LINKMOV and x32/x64 machines / Posted 2010 07/26 16:15
Yes, your XP emulation test should be one of the best test you can do.
:)

Incidentally, please make sure you try the test using a .MOV file other than what you created yourself. The attachment below - Aussie_High.mov - plays fine on my Gom Player.

Hopefully, the developers will build-in these rogue codecs (.MOV, .RM, et al) in an early future release... so keep fingers, toes, arms, legs and eyes crossed that it will happen.
:)

Please let us know the final result, even if there's nothing more you can do. Usually, guys just disappear into the ether and no-one ever knows if they left happy or sad.

#7LINKDag Gum Home Mov! / Posted 2010 07/26 19:40
Apparently, anything made with my video camera cannot be played in GOM. Doesn't make sense, as the other players now can. And I did test in Win 7 x86 this time. I want my perfect world, darn it! :)~

#8LINKhow to MOV on :) And how to fix it! / Posted 2010 07/26 21:17
Well, at least you know, my friend.

I'm betting part of the reason is because your cam doesn't make headers (or you neglect to turn that setting on as required content).
So perhaps Gom Player is a bit more exacting than some other players (requires perfection in front matter of the input).
BUT, if so, it's a bit ironic because Gom Player is one of only a few that plays AVI files that don't have an index (which other players refuse to do). And the index is at the END of the file, not at the beginning... And maybe there's a clue there.

Ok, so how do you make it play?

Easy.

Rename your file from P1000974.MOV to P1000974.AVI
And it will work ok... natively (ie. maybe without requiring "foreign" codecs).
:)

What I think might happen here is that, without index and/or header, Gom Player handles the film using a sequential read method (to the extent that it doesn't even want to know the file type). Maybe we can think of this as a "brute force" method like lost password recovery of protected files?
Reason I think that is because VLC Player will also handle a media file ok if it has no header (at the beginning) or index (at the end). And it plays your P1000974.MOV ok.
hmmmm. Alpha and omega.
So I'm guessing that maybe (maybe not) you could also get .RM films to play the same way!

May you live in interesting times.

#9LINKMov madness / Posted 2010 07/26 22:01
LOL Renaming to avi worked. Guess Gom devs will notice that and add compatibility with mov files with no headers. I'm guessing (hoping), of course. Thanks.

After changing all my mov files to an avi extension, the video plays but there is still no audio in GOM player. Must be some preference setting to pick up the audio? Audio works fine in WMP.
